Our motorcycle road trip in South Africa

This country calls out to us with its long journey towards freedom, but it also attracts us for the exploration of its wildlife. Steeped in a rich colonial history, South Africa is now a true cultural melting pot, with its music, cuisine, and vibrant expressions of color and joy serving as a way of life.

The hospitality is undoubtedly warm, the landscapes breathtaking, and there’s no doubt that you’ll return from this motorcycle journey at the edge of the world, with its many facets, your suitcases filled with emotions.

Located in the southern hemisphere, note first and foremost that in South Africa, the seasons are reversed compared to those we know in the northern hemisphere. Thus, the spring period is from August to October, summer from November to February, autumn from March to April, and winter from May to July.

You must take into account the weather to prepare for your motorcycle trip. While the sunshine and temperature are roughly similar between South Africa, Johannesburg in the East, and Cape Town in the West, not only does rainfall differ between the two regions, but it is also reversed between the summer and winter months. Therefore, while precipitation is higher in Cape Town during the winter, it is higher in Johannesburg during the summer.

Also, for your motorcycle road trip, the choice of destination will be crucial if you wish to avoid heavy rains. Of course, for safari enthusiasts, the implications will be different, as depending on the vegetation density, hence the level of precipitation, animal observation will vary.

The reasons for wanting to go on a motorcycle road trip in South Africa can be numerous. Don’t we often say that the grass is always greener on the other side, at the neighbor’s? These reasons are specific to each individual, but inevitably, they lead to enriching experiences.

Naturally, we are drawn to what we do not know, and it is perfectly legitimate to want to live new experiences. Among the most sought-after, the fascinating cultural diversity is an excellent reason to want to learn about the different ethnicities, languages, and traditions that animate the local population. Its history and heritage alone are worth a pause for reflection.

Marked by a rich and complex colonial history, it is the country that witnessed the birth of apartheid and lived to the rhythm of its defender, Nelson Mandela, who was long held captive on Robben Island.

The French, the Dutch, the British, the Portuguese—several nations, starting from 1652, contributed to shaping the country’s heritage. From gastronomy to architecture, passing through industry, each has left its mark, which today enriches South Africa, inviting visitors to discover this country with warm hospitality. Of course, we cannot forget the timeless safaris that attract the majority of visitors who come for the “Big Five,” during which it is possible to observe the lion, the elephant, the buffalo, the leopard, and the rhinoceros.

South Africa offers a great diversity of landscapes, ranging from vast green plains to majestic mountains, from spectacular coasts to arid deserts. Here are some of the most iconic landscapes of South Africa:

The Karoo and the Little Karoo, desert roads for your motorcycle trip:

These are semi-desert regions, fertile in some places, with endless plains, some rock formations, and isolated hills. They are bordered to the south by the Swartberg chain and a geological fault 150 km further north. If you are interested in flora, you will be won over. The reference point of the Karoo and the Little Karoo is the town of Oudtshoorn, the world capital of the ostrich.

The Drakensberg, traverse this mountain range by motorcycle

Very well known as a geological fault nearly 1000 km long, this imposing mountain range is built in the manner of an enclave in South Africa but, to a large extent, also constitutes a country, Lesotho. The vegetation can be very lush. The word breathtaking takes on its full meaning here.

Further north of the Drakensberg, near Mozambique, you will find canyons that offer panoramic views of spectacular rock formations and the Blyde River itself from which the Blyde River Canyon region takes its name.

Just nearby is the famous Kruger Park, a vast savannah that is home to one of the largest varieties of wildlife. Known for hosting the Big Five, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros, it is besieged in spring for its safaris.

The entire region that stretches from Durban, on the Indian Ocean to the East, to Agulhas on the South Atlantic Ocean, the coastal landscapes alternate with green expanses, lagoons like Knysna or one of the most beautiful white sandy beaches in Jeffreys Bay. This is where you will find the famous R62, Garden Route, or Garden Route, a region that experiences a explosion of color every season. It includes the amaryllis belladonna, the agapanthus africanus, the country’s emblem the Protea cynaroides, the phaenocoma proliferates and many others.

As you approach Cape Town and the Cape of Good Hope, in addition to the landscapes with even more lush vegetation, the rugged shores become numerous. Thus, like False Bay, Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay, Kogel Bay, Hout Bay, Camps Bay, the coastal road turns into a veritable paradise for bikers. To finish in apotheosis, the Chapman’s Peak Drive will eventually finish you off; you will not come out unscathed!

This should not make us forget this small portion, inland, near Cape Town, which concentrates the essential of South Africa’s wine production. Expect to be able to observe and cross the vineyards planted on the hillsides all around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Worcester.

Cape Town on our motorcycle itinerary

Located on the southwest coast of the country, Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa. When we mention the Western Cape, we often think of this western part of South Africa, prosperous and touristy for a number of years. The city of Cape Town is also distinguished by its emblematic flat mountain in the background named Table Mountain.

Very cosmopolitan, the city is bright, colorful, rich in its cultural diversity, with Western, Zulu, and Afrikaner influences contributing to a dynamic and welcoming atmosphere.

Despite the proximity of the townships of Langa, Muizenberg, or Khayelitsha, cultural tolerance and open-mindedness are welcome, and, as shown by the New Year’s Day parade, spirits and weekend braais are quite festive. In the daily lives of South Africans, this is perfectly reflected in their cuisine, art, or music.

You will find a variety of restaurants offering cuisine from around the world, lively markets, cultural and artistic festivals, as well as a flourishing artistic scene.

The Cape region by motorcycle: Our itinerary

Around Cape Town, except for dirt roads or off-road, our itinerary will allow you to enjoy most of the landscapes that can be seen in South Africa. National parks, nature reserves, and other tourist destinations will be on the menu for our motorcycle days.

To mention the itinerary of a motorcycle road trip to Cape Town without going to the most famous maritime points taken by famous navigators would have left an unfinished taste in this trip and would be like visiting Paris without having seen the Eiffel Tower. This is of course the Cape of Good Hope or Cape of Good Hope at the extreme south, on the Atlantic Ocean side and so much feared by the navigators of yesteryear.

Motorcycle enthusiasts planning a trip to South Africa will be delighted to know that at Air Moto Tours, we offer motorcycle road trips in every corner of the world. So, if you feel like an adventurer and want to embark on a journey combining cultures and motorcycle circuits, we invite you to visit our page dedicated to other trips.
