Terraced rice fields and, above all, beautiful roads lead us to our arrival at Koya San. This sacred place and cradle of Shingon Buddhism is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to nearly 120 temples and monasteries as well as a vast forest of ancient cryptomeria trees. It houses the Okuno-in, a cemetery with over 200,000 tombstones of samurai, dignitaries, and ordinary people.
